VLV Autumn Conference 2024

VLV’s 41st Autumn Conference was held at the Geological Society, Piccadilly, London on 28th November 2024.  

We explored a range of subjects which are of crucial importance to the future of British broadcasting which included BBC News and current affairs, the infrastructure which underpins our TV network in the UK, the future of radio and podcasting, as well as taking a deep dive into the content of Channel 5, one of our Public Service Broadcasters.

Jonathan Munro became BBC News Global Director in September 2024. He is also Deputy CEO of BBC News and Current Affairs.

This session was chaired by Fran Unsworth, former Director, News and Current Affairs for BBC News 

This session covered the work of the World Service, BBC News and  their funding as well as how content is prioritised. 

Sarah Rose oversees the Channel 5 and My5 platforms as well as maintaining commercial oversight of Paramount’s Pay TV brands – MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon – in the region. Since 2020 Sarah has been a driving force behind the commercial success of the Channel 5 portfolio and My5. 

This session was chaired by Helen Jay,  policy and communications consultant and lecturer. 

Sarah was passionate about the future of Channel 5’s role as a Public Service Broadcaster in the UK. 

In the afternoon we had two panels which explored the challenges and opportunities for PSB as we move towards an online world.

Broadcaster Ritula Shah chaired the first session which was on speech audio. 

She was joined by Tim Levell, Programme Director of Times Radio, Mohit Bakaya, Director of Speech Audio at the BBC and Controller of Radio 4 and Radio 4 Extra, and Kate Taylor, award-winning audio producer and founder of the Feast Collective Freelance Production Network. 

The final session of the day focused on the question of how we will be watching TV in 10 years’ time as technology changes and more people are watching video content online. 

This session was chaired by Colin Browne, Chairman of VLV. Our panel were Magnus Brooke, Director of Strategy, Policy and Regulation at ITV, Professor Maria Michalis from the University of Westminster, Laurie Patten, Director of Strategy and Regulation at Arqiva, and Ed Leighton, Director of Strategy and Policy at Ofcom, who led the recent Ofcom research into TV distribution.
